Colour Theory Course for Adults 2026/2027

First lesson: Thursday 29 October 2026,9.00–13.00
Led by Simona Zampa

The adult course of LAB – Laboratori di cultura urbana devoted to colour theory and its practical exploration returns for its fifth edition. Led by Simona Zampa, the course comprises 14 lessons and follows the teaching approach of Josef Albers, which places practice before theory. The exercises proposed from one lesson to the next aim to deepen the understanding of concepts such as hue, intensity, gradation, saturation, colour intervals, vibrating boundaries and the relatedness of colours. The work centres on the conclusions drawn from direct experience with coloured papers, rather than on theoretical notions of how colour ought to behave.

Course objectives

The course aims to heighten participants’ sensitivity to the properties of colour, such as hue, value, saturation and temperature, and to the degrees of relatedness between colours.

It teaches how to observe and assess the behaviour of colour, developing a thorough understanding of its relativity and changeability. It offers familiarity with colour relationships that can be applied consciously in one’s own projects, along with a precise vocabulary for discussing the properties of colour.

At the end of the course, the works produced will be shown in an exhibition at the Limonaia of Villa Saroli.
