Reactivate common spaces!

Summer School Ticino is an annual workshop organized by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in collaboration with the Istituto Internazionale di Architettura (i2a) that brings together international students from different disciplines in the alpine region of Valle di Blenio, Switzerland, for a week in late summer.

We will work on real projects, on-site and in direct collaboration with local communities. Students will have the opportunity to be actively involved in participatory design processes and in the implementation and construction of their projects at 1:1 scale.

The goal is to reactivate common spaces through a range of interventions spanning from architecture to public space, from landscape to design.
This interdisciplinary approach allows the integration of socio-economic and environmental learning related to the specific territorial conditions.

Summer School Ticino challenges the participants to confront multiple facets of reality in a comprehensive and coherent way, with punctual but significant changes that can contribute to the development of local communities.

WHAT here the three projects we are delighted to share with you!

1.     Design process and improvement of the public spaces in front of the ethnographic museum of Olivone - to be built in 2025 An ancient typical construction of the valley in front of the church, whose relationship with the surroundings is ruled by the beautiful presence of the stone walls that generate communicating open-air rooms; then the road appeared, the levels changed and a way has to be found to reconnect and create a space of peace.

2.     Designing models and prototypes for the layout, furniture and equipment alongside several paths in the valley - to be realised in spring 2025 Development of the concept starting with the pear tree path related to an ongoing cataloguing and planting project to safeguard biodiversity. The prototypes will then be the subject of a moment of discussion and choice by the population, which will be followed by the refinement phase before the production on a larger scale

3.     Connecting spaces - Hands-on strategies for a mountain pasture in peril. The Ancient village of Germanionico, 1’470 m.a.s.l, is already undertaking a process of consolidation for what concern the conservation of the buildings. Communal outdoor spaces, once organized by stone walls and other small elements are now blurred by the passage of time. The group will try to recompose and give new meanings to this realm in between constructions
